From 2005 until his last match in 2021, Papa and I watched Manny Pacquiao's matches. Mama watched along with us.
Mama would get excited when she watched those matches. She would talk to the TV: she'd yell and coach Manny how to fight like she was his trainer. She wanted him to keep punching his opponent non-stop. It should be "Joog! Joog! Joog!" she would say.
Before we knew Manny, we often watched Oscar De La Hoya: another great champion. Mama said he was the only handsome boxer she'd ever seen. In 2008, Oscar and Manny fought in a match, but Oscar was older and past his prime, so the match was stopped before round 9. Oscar's face was bruised and swollen. After that match, he retired. Manny was truly unbeatable at that time.
In the early years, Manny liked to do the sign of the cross while in the middle of a fight. Mama would get annoyed whenever she saw Manny doing that.
Her view of Manny soured even further when he became a "bible ambassador" and entered politics. After that, Mama wanted Manny to get knocked out whenever he was in a match.
Manny Pacquiao also became a source of comedy and entertainment for Mama when he ran to become president of the Philippines; he became Manny "Pakyu"! If he ever fought in another boxing match, Mama wanted him knocked out.
